Abstract

Our research shows that the climate crisis is not an external, but an inner, relationship crisis. It is spurred by the vicious cycle of mind and climate change that deteriorates both personal and planetary wellbeing. This vicious cycle demonstrates that the mind is not only a victim of increasing climate impacts. It is also a key driver of the crisis, and a barrier to sustainable climate action. These inner dimensions are, however, not adequately addressed in mainstream sustainability practice, education and policymaking, which thus fails to generate more sustainable pathways. Our results show that systematic integration of inner and outer dimensions of sustainability is key for improving climate resilience and addressing other sustainability challenges across individual, collective, and system levels, and indicate the inner human capacities that are needed to support related change.
