Abstract
Health services research is a multidisciplinary research area which focuses on describing, analyzing, and evaluating the organization, function, and results of health care systems. In 1980, a professorial chair in the subject was established at Uppsala University in Sweden and Björn Smedby was the first to hold the professorship. Today, health services research is conducted at both the faculties of social and medical sciences through the subject’s connection to economics, political science, health economics, and organizational theory, as well as social medicine and public health. This article reviews the development of health services research since the 1970s onwards, and reflects on the potential future role of health services research in improving the quality and efficiency of health care delivery.
