Abstract
Healthcare professionals have a responsibility and a good opportunity to detect exposure to violence. It is not uncommon for abused people to seek care repeatedly for various symptoms and physical ailments. Studies show that many of the patients we encounter with long-term problems have early experiences in the life of violence and several of the most common pain conditions have links to sexual abuse.
At the physiotherapist program, University of Gothenburg, teaching regarding violence in close relationships has been relevant since 2011. The students gain theoretical knowledge about violence and its mechanisms, skills training in identifying victims of violence and tools for managing their professional role and responsibilities. The knowledge about violence is given in a structured approach with progression during the study program.
