Abstract

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a challenging treatment for severe hematological diseases and there is a need for supportive interventions. The doctoral studies evaluated both physiological and psychological parameters whether music therapy can be helpful for children during and after HSCT. The children in the music therapy group had significantly reduced heart rate in the evening compared to the control group (p< 0.001) and the children’s quality of life improved significantly after music therapy. Children’s and parents’ experiences of the interactive process during the music therapy intervention were also investigated. The participants described feelings of joy, recognition and were emotionally affected. The focus of this article is to present the second and third articles in the doctoral thesis. In conclusion: music therapy can be a complementary and effective intervention during and after HSCT for children.
