Abstract
This article presents theories and concepts useful for critical reflections of the connection between music, health, and wellbeing. Departing from theories of music sociology and discourse psychology opportunities for musical action in practice are at the fore. Here the concept of musical agency is presented as an important prerequisite for a health promoting and ethical performance of the music therapeutic practice. Along with the concepts of intersubjectivity and co-action, the communicative, social, and cultural aspects of the medium of music is further emphasized. Here the importance of shared actions and relations are also made visible. To counter issues of power and ethical dilemmas in practice the text argues the need for critical reflections on ideas governing the music therapeutic views of music, health, and wellbeing.
